Fractions activity

Today during Maths we make and compared number lines. We were looking at the relationships between 1/3s, 1/4s and 1/12s. Afterwards the students investigated the relationships using measuring cups and rice.

Here are some of the observations the students made.

“3/12 is the same as 1/4 and 4/12 is the same as 1/3”.
“Both 3 and 4 are factors of 12”.
“All whole numbers line up”.
“2 1/4s are the same as 1/2 and 4 1/4s are the same as 1 whole”.
“The difference between 1/4 and 1/3 is 1/12”.

We are planning on making juggling balls with the rice after lunch.
